“I am continually searching for the beauty, vulnerability and transience that nature holds within her.”
AS SPRING APPROACHES and the earth’s flora and fauna blossom into life, The Culturium’s first guest post of the year invites Dutch nature photographer, Ronald Peeters, to showcase his visually stunning work.
In the following article, reproduced with kind permission from the Abstracts issue of SOULFUL PHOTOGRAPHY (No. 12 November/December 2025), Ronald explores the way in which he was captivated by the beautiful choreography of a skein of Canada geese, leading in turn to the development of his photographic skills and a deeper appreciation of the meaning of existence itself.
As an artistic nature photographer, living in the Netherlands, my deepest desire is to touch the breathtaking beauty of nature, to truly grasp its essence. Since my tender childhood, I’ve found inspiration in my deep bond with Mother Nature. For me, she is a fount of pure stillness, profound wisdom and immense trust. In my countless wanderings through the natural world, I am ceaselessly seeking new ways to express what reveals itself beyond immediate perception.
Since the advent of the Single-Lens Reflex (SLR) camera, I’ve immersed myself in nature photography. Trained as a biology teacher, I initially let my biological perspective guide me, capturing dragonflies, butterflies, blossoms and mushrooms, each detail rendered with sharp precision. Yet, in 2015, during a project on mosses, a completely new photographic vision revealed itself through my camera. The inimitable interplay of colours and light overwhelmingly surprised me, opening a gateway to an artistic approach where photography and painting seamlessly merge. Since then, in my photo series, I am continually searching for the beauty, vulnerability and transience that nature holds within her.
The inspiration for Echoes From Eternity welled up in August 2022, on the banks of a mist-shrouded fen, where Canadian geese spend their nights. With the first light of dawn, they ascend, a chorus of honks and splashing water, on their way to their feeding grounds, only to return at dusk. I witnessed their breathtaking choreography, the grace of their flight, the poetry of their wingbeats. Sometimes against a clear blue sky, then veiled in the soft shrouds of a cloudy day. I didn’t want to freeze this flight in sharp, static photographs but rather to capture the movement itself—the fragile moment, the dynamism, the fleetingness. The images with only the sky as a backdrop moved me most profoundly: their vastness, infinity, timelessness.
For me, a silent echo of eternity resonates through these images; they awaken a profound respect for a world we are meant to experience primarily with our hearts. They form an ode to beauty, to the dance of life and to our deep connection with Mother Nature.
Currently, I’m working on the project, A Summer Morning Walk. Using Intentional Camera Movement (ICM), I create painterly images of walkers, cyclists and athletes who, in the early morning sun, become one with nature. In this project, too, I find that Mother Nature is an inexhaustible source of inspiration and wonder; she continually invites me to seek the echoes of eternity in every moment.
